Artist's Description

First of 4 digital artworks created using Corel Painter v10 for a WWF FDC envelope issue. This took around 3 days (36 hours to paint) mainly because it is composed using scenes from a number of ref pix. The main ref shot just showed the chick and the female adult (on the left) but the background was only foliage, and so I used a background which shows the kind of environment these birds are found on Christmas Island. I then added the male bird from another ref pic and various bits of foliage from others. In total, there ended up being 20 separate layers, including one for the sky, one for the sea, numerous ones for foliage, separate ones for each bird and several for the nest. The chick alone took a day to paint ( 12-15 hours)
This piece was difficult enough and took long enough to put together digitally. In traditional media it would have been much harder and taken at least twice as long.

About Owen Bell

Owen Bell

I am professional illustrator with over 40 years experience. I have been working exclusively digitally for the last 10 years. I work in a ‘photorealistic’ style, using Corel Painter (vX) in conjunction with a Wacom Touch tablet and pressure sensitive stylus. Although my work is often mistaken for photographs, I do not use photographs for anything other than reference. All artwork is painted in the same way as with traditional media. I won the Grand Prize in the Corel Asia-Pacific Digital Art Competition 2011 with a work entitled 'Reddish Egret', a very similar painting to one displayed here on FAA entitled 'Reddish Egret 2' I have decided to offer all new artwork both with and without borders, keylines and titles. I will re-post...
